Nanophage and Echo leapt from the apartment window into the night, heading toward Auspicitator's golden form. The great eye was open, sending waves of heat across the city. Auspicitator was connected to Trantec's core by a massive bundle of cables. Both of the Champions approached invisibly and attacked. However, Auspicitator proved tougher than expected, withstanding the first blows. Looking at Nanophage, she called on her to help her and stop Echo. The city depending on it as the End was coming. She struggled not to attack her friend, but her time was short.
In the bowels of the city, Peace and Tower prepared for the arrival of the black sphere. The red light dimmed and became a pool of liquid. The sphere looked like a nightmarish version of the Great Maker himself. Suddenly, Bitter Metal transformed and attacked Tower. His blow actually penetrated Tower's seemingly invulnerable defences. Bitter Metal was now a lithe crystal figure, filled with fleshy veins. Peace attacked the sphere but found it unphased. As he recovered, he picked up the incarnadine liquid and tried to take Autochthon's memories from the Manifold Storage. All the knowledge of the Great Maker filled him. He knew that the crystal figure was called Herald of the Black Engine, the red liquid was one of the component souls of Autochthon himself, and the black sphere was Autochthon's nightmare of his own demise manifested.
Higher in the city, the battle continued. Echo struck at Auspicitator, who in turned stripped Nanophage of her humanity until she attacked Echo. Then, Trantec's eye sent a lance of burning flame that shook the city itself. Also, a great shape of a destroyer appeared from Trantec's core.
Before the fire hit, Herald created a portal for himself and the black sphere. Peace and Tower were doomed to die, but the red liquid had one more trick and transported them both to the top of the city. Together the four Champions overcame Auspicitator and the destroyer.
In the aftermath, Echo convinced Auspicitator to use Trantec's eye to subdue the Fallen running amok in the city. He then confronted Nanophage with the knowledge that she was further from her humanity than ever before.
Tower went to apprehend Silently Flaming Hammer. She stayed purely on Tower's word that he would keep her safe through her trial and would speak on her behlalf.
Peace placed the Incarnadine Crucible in a glass vial. It was now no bigger than a few drops.
