RPGing is so frikkin awesome at the moment
OK this may be a bit of a repeat of my recent 2009 RPG plans, but I can't help but post again about how awesome RPGing is at the moment. And yes, I know these "positive" posts don't get much replies.

Star Wars Saga: Episode 8 begins in a few weeks and I am already at work revising Ep 9. And you know what? Its all awesome and I am looking forward to it more than I have in a while. The changes I have made for Ep 9 rock on toast, but must be kept hush hush for now. Big thank to Nick C for helping here.

Dragonlance SAGA: I have started to ramp up my prep for this upcoming game and again I am super excited about it. The adventure is weird. Its like nothing that I have ever run before and it isn't without pitfalls. However, it really does feel like a fantasy novel with huge chunks of WoD style gaming, which was exactly what I wanted. I have no idea how the system will handle it all but I don't care. Bonzai!

D&D4e: The game that probably has fueled my energies for the two games above. I have just started a PbP (after the previous one died) and I am, you guessed it :), super excited about the adventure, the system and my growing mastery of the medium.

Descent: OK so this isn't RPGing but its a D&D cousin. I ran this for the Kapiti crowd recently. Could I be bored by 4 variants of D&D? No! It was loads of fun and the kids really enjoyed it too.

Add in what's on the horizon:

Eberron: The books I have most been looking forward to for D&D4e are here real soon (assuming WGS can get their distributor honest and back into shape). I am really looking forward to seeing how cool it will be as mini-campaign. Plus as a bonus, Dungeon just released today an add on module for that mini-campaign. Choice!

Eoris: Still delayed due to a printing error but back on track, my no.1 most anticpated RPG is getting closer.

WitchGirl Adventures: Showing that the RPG industry can still pleasantly surprise me - an RPG for tween girls, and me with two daughters. It will sit next to Blue Rose and Faery Tale :)

Even the Star Wars releases are looking a little brighter now... but that could just be my mood :)

I need more roleplaying.

Two games with saga in the titles but from what I understand they are completely unrelated. SW Saga is 4e lite yes? while Dragonlance SAGA is what exactly. I've never encountered it other that a few posts by you.

Running around my head at the moment is a Final Fantasy style game set in a future version of Wellington. But I really have no idea what would be a good system for a Final Fantasy game.

I tend to prefer system lite for play, but with good customization for characters that a) describes character and roleplaying and b) can be used effectively in a lite setting. There is nothing worse than a player getting frustrated because they think their character has little control over their outcome. Given some of the players I would be playing with and the fact that I would want story authority over this one I'm thinking shared narrative options aren't really what I want.

Of course I'm already running a game and really need to play in something to revive enthusiasm. Not that I lack rpg enthusiasm, more that I can only go so far with ideas in my game. Especially when I am constantly battling story versus logistics.

Unrelated.

SW Saga isn't really 4e lite (if anything D&D 4e is easier and more streamlined). Its an iteration of the 3.5e system that came before 4e. So, its kind of 3.7e or something :)

DL Saga was a game system created by WotC in the 1990s to provide DL with a lighter and more narrative ruleset. It is partially a reaction to the popularity of WoD at the time. It was also used for Marvel Superheroes.

Eoris! See down at the bottom of my post. Its sort of a WoD take on FF style Fantasy. See also - http://eorisessence.com.

This is close to my preference too. Cthulhutech is a great example of this IMO. Its sort of a WoD style system but without the overboard mechanics of the nWoD.

On saying that, I like a bit of crunch now and then, especially well designed crunch that just brings on the fun, like D&D4e.

Jarratt, I've got Eoris Essence on order. It's the first RPG for ages, other than CthuluTech, that I've been excited enough about to doa pre-order on.

I'll probably push it under your nose saying "look at the shiny" shortly after I get it. :)

I dig playing with crunch, but gming it less so. I would much rather play D&D than run it for example, but I would love playing it.

Eoris does look pretty but it also seems quite bound in its own world. I'm kind of wanting something that is just mechanics that I can put my own skin on top of.

D&D4e is really enjoyable to run. Its one of the big improvements over previous editions IMO The player side has not improved anywhere near as much IMO.

As for Eoris, I agree. Unfortunately, most settingless RPGs are quite bland and settingless anime RPGs are much worse. Big Eyes Small Mouth and OVA are the prime examples you may want to check out.

Hmmm, well I'm not sure I'm looking for Anime specifically. The mood and tone I can create well enough. I want some simple but textured. With good guidelines on how to make it my own. Maybe I just need to make up something myself but I doubt I ever would.

I kind of want to revamp the system we are playing Live Mage under to stream it more in line with how we are playing. I have ideas but...

Also I have been tweeting so much today that this comment seems ridiculously long. And usually my comments don't stop.

Yeah, also looking forward to Eoris.

Did I tell you I actually got a phone call on my mobile from the Eoris people, apologizing for the delay and checking that I was OK to wait?

They rang everyone who had ordered. And they live in Colombia. Their phone bill must be incredible :)

As they live in Columbia, I do wonder whether there will be half a pound of cocaine in the book lining when it arrives.

I mean, a name like "Eoris Essence" sounds like a sort of drug derived form Eors!

And when I read in the latest email about having their "lawyers" talk to the printers, I was wondering whether, by "lawyers", they meant "machine-gun-toting thugs" :)

All good things to be excited about! :)

I've got some good gigs at the moment, but ideally I'd be stoked if I could do some more fantasy gaming or Anime styled gaming(Ctech or Jovian would be super sweet :) )

I definately need to look into Eoris based on what I've seen about it so far.
