Eoris - 2/2 through the setting book
grandexperiment
So I have finished the setting book and finished Eoris Essence RPG. The second half of the setting book was the geography section and the "so what do I do?" section.

Overall, I like Eoris. It was better than I expected. I can play this out of the box with very little modification. However, it has loads of warts in terms of design both system and setting wise. My impression is some of these would also become more apparent on playing it.

The RPG provides a novel setting that I find quite inspiring and a system with some very cool parts. This is where Eoris excels the most - inspiration. If I ran it, it would require almost as much work as creating my own setting, but it would help fuel my imagination quite a bit.

If these guys had another 10 years design experience, Eoris would have soared, but then again perhaps it would also have never been made. That is the double edged blade of these kind of RPGs.

Eoris - 2/3 through the system book
grandexperiment
OK I am about 2/3s through the system book. It covered Traits, Magic and Powers. Man, this game is trippier than 2 Friars riding backwards on a bicycle (but in a good way).

My main thought was that I really wanted a list of all the traits and abilities that had been talked about in the first 1/3 and lo and behold, up next was a Traits chapter. It certainly helped.

Still very positive overall. The setting is very complex and terminology is very complex, but once that becomes more familiar, my feeling is that what will bubble to the surface will be cool and fun.

My wife's favourite quote of mine from yesterday...
grandexperiment
"Ah cool, so it has a kind of drama points that let you do cool stuff."

"You can get extra actions."

"You can jump the initiative queue."

"..."

"You can shoot an energy beam out of your eyes and melt the faces of your enemies..."

"..."

"Cool, I totally get that."

Eoris - 1/3 through the system book
grandexperiment
OK, I have not been able to become a hermit and read this but I will post thoughts as I go. I started with the rulebook and I am about 1/3 of the way through it. I have read the basic system, combat system, social system, basic magic system (no spells) and character creation.

My comments so far:

Overall, I am impressed so far. It has warts but the game seems usable as written. I think it will require a second or third read through. Mostly due to the lack of glossary.

Eoris - My big Gencon surprise
grandexperiment
My biggest and most pleasant surprise of the Gencon weekend was that Eoris has been printed and should be here in a month or so.

I preordered this over 18 months ago, fully aware that it might be vaporware. VoE have made all the newbie publisher mistakes that you can, but have also been incredibly conscientious. The game may end up being a dog but I am very excited by it.

Just in case you are rolling to disbelieve, here are the picsCollapse )
